The Other Side of Athens

My objective in this film is to reveal another lifestyle that is occurring here in Athens, Georgia. You will see how people have become entangled in homelessness. It's a thought provoking illustration of the choices, living conditions and perspective of the homeless population. There are many common threads to each individual’s story-- substance abuse, dramatic events that initiated the process, prostitution and on a positive note, faith.  Finally, there is hope for many, and as they make better choices, some have graduated from this lifestyle back to what we consider more normal.  My hope is that this documentary will give you a new perspective on..

The Other Side of Athens.

My Concluding Thoughts

I wanted to take a documentary film class to enhance my skills with iMovie this semester, and it was one of the best experiences I could have gotten with filming and editing. In addition my topic opened my eyes to a completely different world.  It was one of those classes that sticks with you forever and changes the way you independently think. I feel like everyone wonders about homeless people, but they aren’t really concerned because it is so easy to become enthralled in your own life.  I personally used to assume whatever I wanted and I never asked questions.  This semester I took a bold step and interviewed homeless people around Athens.  I had so much film and I wish I could have included everything; however, I think I portray a clear picture of what I have learned through this journey.

Oftentimes it was hard to be professional. I wanted to invite each individual to live at my house!  I found myself close to tears when some of them shared stories they did not wish to share on film.

I have always believed that every person that you encounter in life changes you in some way, and each of these people have changed my perspective on the stereotypes of homelessness.  You cannot judge someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes.  After completing this project I have a new understanding and sense of respect.  Thomas says, “show some love toward the homeless people and give them an uplift in faith and motivation.”  A simple smile or encouraging words make all the difference...
